What is Jeet Kune Do?

Jeet Kune Do is a fighting concept that was developed by the legendary Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee created this martial art after years of research and practicing various different martial art forms.

The Creation of Jeet Kune Do

Lee began doing more research and practicing with different martial arts with various backgrounds. Not just strikers, but also different grappling experts. One of which was the late pioneer, Judo Gene LeBell, who showed Lee the importance of ground fighting. Bruce Lee would continue taking the best elements of different martial arts and putting them into his fighting system. Lee would introduce his fighting concept in 1967 that he would call Jeet Kune Do.

What Does It Consist Of?

Jeet Kune Do is the formation of the best elements of the most effective martial art. Basically a precursor to modern MMA. Taking elements of the best striking and grappling martial arts and then putting them together into one form. Consisting of everything from Boxing, Wing Chun, boxing, Savate, Judo, wrestling, Muay Thai and the footwork and concepts of fencing. A heavy emphasis on intercepting is the biggest element that students learn; training to adapt to different situations, see their opponent’s attacks coming, intercept them, and counter.

The Principles

When Bruce Lee created Jeet Kune Do, many believed in the principles of traditional martial arts. Going through the same patterns and being systematic. Bruce saw that these traditional martial arts were closely formed and never expanded to address their flaws. Lee’s view of martial arts was that fights are ever changing and you must be prepared for anything. In fighting terms, Jeet Kune Do practitioners believe in minimal effort with maximum effect. Believing that the simplest techniques are the most effective. Also teaching the importance of staying calm when under attack. Reading the situation and striking swiftly when you see your opening.

The Philosophy

Bruce Lee not only made Jeet Kune Do a martial art, but also a philosophy. When he made his famous “be like water” speech, he wasn’t only talking about fighting, but also life in general. Lee believed in order to succeed at anything, you must be formless with an empty mind. This way, you will always be able to find a solution to any scenario. Always looking to grow and improve upon the person you were yesterday.

How Did Jeet Kune Do Revolutionize Martial Arts?

Bruce Lee’s development of Jeet Kune Do changed the way many view martial arts. Traditionally martial artists would train their form and dismiss all others. Never addressing their flaws or trying to fix them. Bruce realized that martial arts and fighting are ever changing. To be a complete fighter, you must be prepared for anything and train in all aspects of fighting. Including being able to defend yourself when you’re standing or on the ground. The principles and techniques that Bruce Lee shared helped lay the groundwork for modern MMA. Now modern martial artists see the importance of learning different techniques to be prepared for any that could happen and adapt.
