Junior dos Santos out boxed and out wrestled Shane Carwin at UFC 131 in Vancouver yesterday, breaking his nose and messing his face to secure his place as the number one contender for Cain Velasquez's heavyweight belt. Coming off an 11-month layoff himself, Carwin replaced an injured Brock Lesnar for the re-tooled main event. The co-main bout swung to the opposite side of the scale, featuring a rail-thin Kenny Florian successfully making his debut at 145 lbs against Team Nova Uniao featherweight Diego Nunes. Florian appeared weak in the first round and was dropped in a tense moment before the bell but gained his footing and outworked Nunes to take the decision. He admitted during the post-fight interview that his weightcut affected his performance. Florian is expected to get a title shot next against featherweight champ Jose Aldo. Dave Herman and Jon Olav Einemo took Fight of the Night with an explosive heavyweight showing but Mark Muñoz and Demian Maia featured the night's best display of mixed martial arts with a back-and-forth battle that hit all ranges and showcased Maia's greatly improved striking abilities. Muñoz won a hard to score unanimous decision. The night was marred by baffling judging (one judge gave Muñoz a 30-27 despite him clearly losing the first round), including a robbery of Michihiro Omigawa that prompted Dana White to promise Omigawa his win bonus despite the official loss. Sam Stout on the other hand didn't have to bother with the judges, shutting Yves Edwards off with a devasting hook and winning Knockout of the Night.
