This is a guest post from one of our students, David Gilbert, about how training Muay Thai at Kombat Arts has helped him overhaul his life. It's a great story, check it out and pass it on. Thanks David, keep up the awesome work!
My Kombat Experience and Journey to a Better Me
I have been dealing with obesity since childhood. I was never an athlete, never played sports for fun, and grew into an adult who got increasingly out of shape. I had the self-esteem and confidence of that same fat kid who never got picked to play on the team with the other kids. I had always been interested in martial arts, but I lacked the confidence to make any kind of effort to learn.
I finally took a chance and walked in to the
Kombat Arts Training Academy. At first, I wanted to turn around and run back to the couch, convinced that this was too hard, too much, and that I didn’t belong here. But I stayed, and my life was forever changed. I was immediately welcomed to the Kombat Community with open arms, despite the fact I was an out of shape, 320-plus pound couch potato.
In January of 2011, I made the decision to join Kombat Arts and be consistent with my training and my diet. I was 316 pounds when I joined, and out of shape from not eating properly and not exercising. The staff and coaches at Kombat never once treated me like I didn’t belong. They pushed me when I needed it, praised me when I earned it, and instilled in me the knowledge, skills, and confidence in myself that I had been wanting my entire life.
With the help of my Kombat Coaches and proper diet and nutrition, I am proud to say that I have lost almost 75 pounds as of July 18. I am consistently training
Muay Thai three days a week and am seeing great results. My coaches and fellow students are an integral part of my support system, and I can never thank them enough for their guidance and willingness to help me become a healthier, better me. I still have a long road ahead, but am grateful that I do not walk it alone, because my Kombat Family walks with me.
