On Tuesday, August 30, after coming home from school, my 18-year-old cousin got mugged and during the struggle was thrown against the ground, causing her to lose consciousness. No one on the street did a thing to help her. Thankfully, two teens in a passing jeepney stopped the driver when they saw her and ran to her rescue; they awakened her, asked her address and brought her to her mother. She was rushed to the hospital where she was found to have a brain bleed and a fractured skull. She's been vomiting blood (over 15 times the day before last), but is coherent. The hospital bill comes to 20,000 pesos, or approximately $470 cdn, per day and her family is not insured, nor do they have that money to afford her stay. The hospital demanded 50 per cent on Friday and we wired what we could. Thus far, the family has a bill for $2500 cdn outstanding and we are working as hard as we can to gather the funds.
