Next up in our slow-news-week series is, for my money, one of the best sports documentaries ever made: When We Were Kings (1996). Directed by Leon Gast, the film captures Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in the buildup to their 1974 championship tilt, the Rumble in the Jungle. Featuring analysis by two of best writers to ever write about boxing, Norman Mailer and George Plimpton, cultural commentary from Spike Lee, and concert footage including performances by B.B. King and James Brown, the film is a revealing and artful portrait of boxing history as well as an enlightening look at how Ali influenced black America.
