So there are some members at the club that may be realizing how important their hips are for the martial arts world; not to mention just everyday movement! You will find that your hips will get really used a lot during Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. So I wanted to share a couple of resources that may help you strengthen your hips and make you more mobile in that area. First here is a very good video on the mechanics of the hip, courtesy of Joel Jamieson of 8 Weeks Out. Joint Mechanics: The Hip Joel has got some great training ideas, and if you have time, you should check out some of the material, on his website. Make sure to warm up your body with a proper dynamic warm up. Here is the typical one we use at Kombat Arts for our Muay Thai classes. https://youtu.be/8E5Y83Ph-08 Besides squats, kettle bell swings and lunges, here are some exercises that specifically train the hips. Again make sure you are properly warmed up, and you should definitively consider getting a coach to properly show you these exercises. Go very light with these exercises; there is no need to use a lot of weight for these exercises. Multidirectional Sled Hip Drills A few of my students have started experimenting with these exercises and they felt that their knee strikes were getting harder. Again, great information and video from 8 Weeks Out Finally make sure that you stretch your hips. There are tons of great stretches. My favorite stretches usually comes form the world of Yoga. Try searching for some online, or better yet get some assistance from a qualified coach. Hope this information will help you start your journey to improving your hip mobility and strength, so you can improve you Muay Thai, BJJ and quality of life.
