OK people, it’s that time of the year again! The time where we find ourselves asking – what could have been, what should have been, where are we now? The time to reflect on your past achievements, your best moments, and inevitably, your failures. The good news is on January 1st, we get to start all over again.  Or at least the chance to reassess and reapply ourselves to our goals once more. So before we lose our gumption, our enthusiasm and our wayward steam, here are 4 easy tips to finally stick to your New Year’s resolutions: NewYearsResolutions 1) BREAK IT UP INTO MANAGEABLE CHUNKS It may seem a little daunting to lose 50lbs, quit smoking cold turkey or pay off that $40,000 student/consumer debt all at once, but if you break it down into bite-sized, manageable chunks, it doesn’t seem so scary. Take it month-by-month, week-by-week, or day-by-day: I will drink one less soda pop today. I will go to the gym at least once this week. I will take $100 from my paycheck this month to pay off my debt. See? All of a sudden, it’s not so scary anymore. The key is consistency. Do a little bit every day, every week and every month – You will be surprised to see how much progress you will make in 1 year. 2) WRITE IT DOWN What doesn’t get acknowledged, doesn’t get done. Sure, it’s easy to shoot off impressive goals inside your head, but if you never take ownership of it or give it a voice, it’s a hoop dream. So write it down. On a sticky note, print it off on your computer, make a pretty drawing…it doesn’t matter. Then take what you’ve written and post it in your cubicle, your fridge, your bedroom mirror – someplace where you will see it every single day. 3) TELL SOMEONE Great, you’ve written your goals down. Now it’s time to tell someone. (And no, your dog or cat doesn’t count.) Tell a human being.  WHY? Telling someone that you will achieve your goals keeps you accountable. All of a sudden, you realize, Oh crap! I told my mom my resolution this year was to save more money and now I’m broke and need to ask her for $50 to buy my girlfriend a birthday present. Not cool. Pick someone you trust and even better, another person who shares a common goal (like losing weight). It becomes much easier to support one another while striving towards the same thing. And to give each other crap if one of you slacks off! :-P 4) SUCK IT UP/TOUGHEN UP We are all given the same amount of time all around the world – 24 hours, no more, no less - it doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, a nice guy or a jerk, we all get the same amount of time. Stop making excuses, whining about your bad luck or sad hand at life. Crap happens.  Some really bad stuff happens to some people and none to others. We are all busy.  GET OVER IT. Success is something you attract by the person you become. Jim Rohn said this. Don’t be that person who never changes, never improves or passively lets life pass you by. In order to have a great life you must show up, you must TAKE ACTION and you must be ACCOUNTABLE. No one wants to hear about how you couldn’t do this or you would’ve done that, if only you had more ___________ (fill in the blank). Apply yourself, make a commitment and you will be amazed at what happens. Then fast forward to Dec. 31st, 2015: You can now look at yourself in the mirror to know you stuck to your resolutions.
