Fit over 40? Fighting Father Time

Time waits for no man. Every minute of every day, our clock is ticking. The great countdown. We are given 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year. And it seems the older we get, the faster that clock moves. Our lives become full of more commitments. Our bodies have been subjected to the wear and tear of our daily lives. We settle in to a pattern of habits and routine. So when is the right time to make a change? How do we proceed to embark on undoing all of the damage that time has done to us? over 40   The answer is, now. The method? It’s not all that different for someone over 40 than it is for someone who is in their 20s. You need to commit to changing, and then you need to consistently do what needs to be done in order to succeed. If your goal is weight loss, then you need to choose a diet that is realistic and maintainable for your lifestyle. You then need to find some kind of training that is within your limitations and consistently put in the work. The difference now, being over 40, is your body may have more aches, pains, and need much more recovery work than someone in their 20s. So that is the third piece of the puzzle. Nutrition, exercise, and recovery. Your metabolism may have slowed down significantly over the years, and you may no longer be able to eat anything and everything the way you did when you were young. So don’t. Find a nutrition program that will be easily maintained. There is no magic pill. Just pay attention to how your body responds and adjust accordingly. Exercise is the same. Your body will not snap back and recover as quickly as it did when you were younger. It will just snap. So always ease into activity and slowly increase intensity while also increasing your recovery time. Focus on mobility and prehab/rehab. You will not undo years of not doing something by overcompensating and trying to do too much too soon. These things, while not easy, should not discourage you from trying. Even small steps towards your goal are better than giving up altogether. You must be patient. Just like the things that have accumulated over the years that made you get to the position you are in, a series of positive changes will accumulate and contribute to helping reach your goals.
