Kid's BJJ Promotions: A Message From Coach Patrick Teruel
On Wednesday, The Kombat Arts Training Academy held it's first Promotion since the inception of it's new Kid's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Class under the tutelage of Coach Patrick Teruel. We are so proud of all the students who received stripes and belts and will continue to watch your growth proudly.
Here is a message from Coach P which sums up the short 4 month journey the kids took, but also a culmination of a lifelong goal for Coach Patrick himself.
"A little bit about me: when I was young I always wanted to be a teacher. However, after years of irresponsibility and along with a lack of focus, I didn't end up pursuing my goal.
Fast forward 18 years later when I find myself at the next level of a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey that started on and off and on and off and on again when I was 29. In my first year as a 37 year old blue belt, I've accomplished almost every goal I set out to achieve. Thanks to hard work and dedication, the staff at Kombat Arts and my amazing + inspirational Professor Amir Yafawi placed the responsibility of running the academy's kids BJJ program in my hands earlier this year.
Tonight marked the first grading day (overseen by Amir) of our newly re-vamped program. I spent an entire summer creating a curriculum for a group of kids that has doubled in size since I took over.
Tonight capped off 4 months of commitment to these kids, all of whom I've really grown to LOVEas my own. We rolled, had some fun, even had a minor nose bleed and then had more fun before kids got stripes and belts. That's what it's all about right? FUN.
As each little gorilla was promoted, I would share a story about that kid with the rest of the class. It was amazing. Then we took a team photo which I will share later tonight. NEVER in my wildest dreams did I think any of this would happen to me. I've won tournaments. I've been acknowledged for my hard work. I've earned the respect of my peers.
However, NOTHING has come to be more humbling than watching these kids who I've started teaching from the ground up - I need to pause - I've watched my little gorillas take the next step in their journey. I'm their teacher. Wow. How cool is that? I'm beside myself writing this. Tonight has been a touching moment in my life and definitely is the BEST highlight of my BJJ journey thus far. Kids, I never said this in class, but I love you all. I will continue to put my heart into you as long as you keep coming to class and keep HAVING FUN. Congratulations to all who have been promoted and for those who are next, your time will come just like all of us."
