Are You Ready to Compete? Becoming an Amateur Muay Thai Fighter.

People do sports for many reasons. But there are two main ones: Passion, and Competition. For some, learning the art and receiving the health benefits are enough. They are passionate about it, and love to practice it daily. Then there are some who take that passion and apply it in the ring. To compete in Muay Thai, one must be passionate about it. To ultimately test your skills, your heart, and your perseverance by stepping up and stepping in the ring. I personally asked some of our Kombat Arts Athletes who compete in Muay Thai, “What made you decide to compete”.  For the most part, they all wanted to reach that next level in their training. They all had their own personal reasons, but the common thread was challenging themselves to become better at the sport they love.  To challenge themselves to become better mentally, physically, and spiritually. Competing is not for everyone.  Honestly, it takes a certain type of person to become well trained in martial arts, and then use that art to attack and defend themselves against another human being. It takes a special kind of person to punch someone in the face and receive one in kind, and then want to continue to do so.  It takes a very special type of person to train long days, give up their social lives, eat, sleep, and breathe fighting for weeks to prepare for the competition. Those that make it through this crucible will tell you that it was all worth it. You can see it in their eyes. It’s not easily defined.  Science says the release of adrenalin and endorphins will create a type of euphoria. But until you’ve stepped in and taken the hits, and returned them, you will never know that feeling. Ready to compete? Where do you start? As always, patience is key. You begin by immersing yourself in the classes. Listen to your Kru. Ask questions. Master the basics. Learn the techniques. Put in all the work in class, and after. Get your conditioning on point. Is your cardiovascular system ready? It better be. After doing all this work, talk to your Coaches and relay your intentions. Participate in your gym’s sparring and Fighter’s classes, or SparFest. All of these things will help prepare you to compete. Research the organizations you want to fight for. Do your homework. Make sure you understand their rules and regulations. Your eagerness to compete must never outweigh your common sense. There are plenty of ways to begin your fighting career that don’t involve fighting for “promoters” who only care about a quick buck and want to use your face to cash in. Kombat Arts Training Academy has extensive experience with reputable organizations and promoters. The Coaches are knowledgeable and are very willing to help those who need guidance. Ultimately, put your trust in them. They will know when you are ready to compete. They will help you get to the next level. If you are willing to put in the work for them, they will work for you.  Don’t just take my word for it, take a look in the lounge area. See those belts on the wall. See the trophies? The Plaques? These represent someone reaching a goal, a milestone, a stepping stone. A dream.  They put in the work, got in the ring, and competed with themselves and their opponents. It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. So start yours if you haven’t yet, and if you have, stay on your path.
