5 Tips to Power Up Your Punches

Anyone involved in combat sports wants to be able to delivering that finishing blow. To be able to harness your energy and deliver that powerful punch that ends the fight and gets you the W. There is a myth that some people are born with “heavy hands” and some people can’t punch their way out a wet paper bag. Good news. Physics tells us that Force = Mass x Acceleration. So how can we use this information to upgrade our punches and make them more powerful?

Repetition

Bruce Lee famously said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” There are only so many ways to throw a punch. Jabs, crosses, hooks, uppercuts, and overhands. Learn the proper technique, and then practice practice practice. There is no substitute for hard work and repetition.

It’s All in the Hips

The hips are an energy amplifier for the human machine, energy is created from the base, transferred through the legs, amplified by the hips and torso, and finally all of the energy comes to a head at the point of impact. So like the above equation, the force created by your body mass multiplies as you accelerate your body’s movement and torque your foot, hips, and torso in unison.

Get Stronger

Sounds easy enough. Just get stronger. The more muscle fibers you recruit to perform a given movement, the more energy they can provide and transfer. Compliment your technical training with some resistance training to grow stronger and gain more power in your punches.

Learn All the Angles

Often times, it’s not only the power of the punch that causes the concussive force to put out someone’s lights. You frequently hear a fighter who gets knocked out say that it was the shot that they didn’t see coming that put them on the mat. Using foot work, feints, and angles of attack, you can create the opportunity to land a clean power punches and maximize the impact without your opponent having time to prepare.

Balance Your Energy Budget

Throwing haymakers and power shots over and over will obviously fatigue your arms and wear you out. Learn to pick your shots wisely, create opportunities. Use combinations of punches and level changes to both vary your attack, and make your opponent make mistakes. This leaves them open for the power punches that will have them on the pain train to Sleepsville.
