Everyday Self-Defense Tips: How to Stay Safe in Parking Lots

Parking lots are where people get caught slipping  not because theyre weak, but because theyre distracted.

At KOMBAT ARTS we keep it simple: scan, plan, move with purpose.

Quick note: This is general safety + training education, not legal advice. Every situation is different. Your #1 job is to get home safe.

Arriving: Park smart, walk smart

1) Scan before you park

Before you commit to a spot, take 3 seconds and check the feel of the area:

  • Lighting and visibility

  • People lingering between cars

  • Anything that blocks your exit or forces you into a tight space

2) Back in if you can

If its an option, back your vehicle in. Its faster, cleaner, and gives you a better exit if you need to leave.

3) Dont advertise valuables

  • Best move: dont leave valuables in the car

  • If you have to, cover them before you arrive (not while youre parked and everyones watching)

4) Stay locked until youre ready

Keep your doors locked until youre ready to get out. When you do, get out and go  no lingering.

5) Remember where you parked

Don't be the person wandering around later with their head down.

  • Note the row/landmark

  • Take a quick pic if you need to

6) Walk like youre switched on

  • Scan around you as you walk

  • Stay off your phone

Leaving: keys ready, head up

1) Keys in hand before you step outside

Before you exit the building:

  • Have your keys ready

  • Know your path to the car

2) Scan your vehicle area

Look for anything thats off:

  • Someone near your car

  • A vehicle tight on the drivers side (van, SUV, anything that blocks your space)

  • Anything that forces you into a narrow gap

3) Ask for help  no ego

If youre unsure, do the smart thing:

  • Ask store staff, security, or a friend for an escort

  • Dont worry about looking awkward  getting home safe is the win

4) Get in, lock, leave

Once youre in:

  • Lock the doors

  • Start the car

  • Leave

  • Stay off your phone until youre on your way

5) Watch for anyone following you

If you think someones following you:

  • Don't drive home

  • Drive to a busy, well-lit place

  • If needed, drive to the nearest police station

Quick Checklist (Save This)

  • Scan before you park

  • Back in when possible

  • Keep valuables out of sight
