  • Video: Jon Jones and Shogun Rua, the early years

Jon Jones challenges Mauricio "Shogun" Rua for the light-heavyweight championship tonight at UFC 128 in what's shaped up to become one of the most anticipated matches we've seen seen in a long time (especially for this division). Last week two great fight clips popped up on the internet, one of Jones's pro-MMA debut, and another of Rua's third match ever, against the more experienced Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos. You can see both how far each man has come, and how promising they were at the outset of their careers. • Countdown to Inosanto: Always a student

Guro Dan Inosanto holds high rankings in a variety of fighting styles, but despite his reputation as one of the living legends of martial arts he is always and forever a student. He sets an example we all need to take to heart as we continue on our learning journey through the arts, and through life in general. Enjoy this video of him rolling with his BJJ instructor, John Machado. Keep in mind that Guro Dan is around 70 years-old in this clip. Never stop learning. • Happy Muay Thai Day!

Muay Thai Day lands on March 17th every year, which also happens to be known as St. Patrick's Day, so it's possible it's not the first thing on your mind today. But let's take a moment to reflect. Thailand's National Muay Thai Day, a.k.a. Boxer's Day, celebrates the legacy of Nai Khanomtom, who legend has it defeated 10 consecutive Burmese fighters to win his freedom from the Burmese king Mangra in the late 1700s. As the story goes, after Mangra captured the capital of Siam (as Thailand was once called), he decided to hold a fighting tournament to pit his Burmese boxers against their Siamese counterparts. Nai Khanomtom soundly defeated one of Burma's champions, but officials claimed he ....

  • Read Brian's blog (and share/start your own!)

We here at Kombat are big advocates of the benefits of keeping a fitness log. Doing so can keep you motivated, help you remember lesson plans and workout routines, and make it easier to notice negative patterns and develop positive habits. With that in mind, be sure to check out Coach Brian Naidu's blog -- with some new goals for the year, he's back to writing regularly and he's been posting some really good stuff. Here's what he's aiming for: Now for new goals and focus. Drop another 20lbs. Strategy to achieve this will be to be diligent on eating right and increase my cardio workouts. Increase my strength and flexibility. I plan on working with our coaches and personal ....

  • Countdown to Inosanto: Black Belt interview, 1995

More classic Dan Inosanto, this time from a 1995 exclusive interview with Black Belt magazine. Guro/Sifu Inosanto talks about his time training under Sigung Bruce Lee, how Lee developed Jeet Kune Do, how his classes were structured, and much more. In this interesting excerpt, Guro Inosanto talks about how his athletic background influenced the type of training equipment Lee used: Because of my track-and-field background, I introduced him to running shoes. Before that, he used to wear these desert boots. Using running shoes was quite new at the time. The only people who wore those kind of gym shoes or sneakers during that period were track-and-field people. Another thing I introduced to ....

  • Lazy Sunday Link Dump: Ultimate Strikeforce edition

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yV_tLctHqN4?rel=0&w=560&h=349] Lazy Sunday reads for March 13, 2011: A fight ending on a cut can be one of the most disappointing MMA outcomes. That's why Nick Diaz, a notorious bleeder, took matters into his own hands by seeking out surgeon Frank Stile, who removed scar tissue from Diaz's face and ground down his protruding brow bones. Is surgery to prevent cuts going to be the norm in MMA? Is it an ethical advantage? Wired magazine looks under the knife. [Wired] Do you consider yourself a conscientious person? If not, it may be something you want to work on. According to new research,  conscientiousness -- more than cheerfulness or ....
