  • New Years Resolutions....In September

A few weeks ago, I posted the following on my Facebook wall and got quite a few interesting questions through Facebook, Twitter and texting: "After training a lot of people, watching other trainers, and just observing people in the gym I can say that the 3 things holding people back from getting better results are: clear attainable goals, nutrition and intensity. Sometimes when I watch people train, I have no idea what the hell they are working on; what their goals are. Secondly, you can work out all you want, but unless you clean up your diet, you will get nowhere. Most people lose the battle in the kitchen. And finally you need to train with intensity. Now I understand that you can't ....

  • How to be a Better Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competitor

Apparently there is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament this weekend at Ryerson University and my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu coach, Amir Yafawi, and some of the Kombat Arts BJJ students will be competing in it. When I was speaking to a few of the competing students, I noticed that a lot of them spoke about how they prepared themselves physically and technically...but no one really spoke about their mental preparations. When I look at some basic training areas, I see this: Physical Preparation Technical Preparation Tactical Preparation Mental Preparation Nutrition Rest Nutrition is what you need to eat and drink to either gain or lose weight, fuel your workouts, and help you recover from ....

Here are 3 tips on how to improve your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu . 1) Crosstrain with Other Grappling Systems Nowadays there are so many various forms of grappling styles (judo, sambo, wrestling) that are accessible to the student. Most grappling systems have an arm bar, chokes, leg bars etc. However how they train it and enter into that submission can be different. They can also have a different philosophy when it comes to getting into a position and holding that particular position. Crosstraining with other practitioners from other grappling systems can help you improve your game on so many levels. You get to see how to apply your art against a different style. • Muay Thai and Kali in Thunder Bay

A few months ago, I was asked by my friend and student Mark Strasser to come to his club in Thunder Bay to teach a 2 day seminar on Kali and Muay Thai. I have not seen Mark in approximately 10 years, so I was pretty excited and honored to be asked to teach the seminar. Mark was a great host and I had a great time sharing my knowledge. On day 1 we covered some double stick patter drills, basic entries, stick grappling and Krabi krabrong from the Dog Brothers Martial Arts System, dealing with edged weapons in the clinch and on the ground and some application of judo and wrestling against the knife. On day 2 we worked on some basic Muay Thai skills, entries into elbows and knees, some of ....
