Which Filipino Martial Arts Do We Teach?
Now if you’re reading this, you may know that Filipino martial arts is a bit of a vague term to use. Truthfully, that would be a correct assertion, because there are numerous types of Filipino martial arts practiced.
So, the Filipino martial art that Kombat Arts Training Academy teaches? We teach a well known Filipino martial art called “Pekiti-Tirsia Kali.” A highly effective and popular Filipino martial art.
What is Pekiti-Tirsia Kali (PTK)?
Pekiti-Tirsia Kali, or PTK for short, is one of the most practiced Filipino martial arts in the world; a fighting system with over 125 years of history.
The martial art was started by Norberto Tortal in 1897 and then continued by his grandson Conrado Tortal. Leopoldo Tortal Gaje Jr (the grandson of Conrado Totral) is the current keeper and Grand Tuhon of the Pekiti-Tirsia Kali system. Originally, the Tortal family designed their fighting system to not only fight enemies, but also wild animals.
All of the moves in PTK are based on the Filipino stick fighting art of Arnis (Eskrima), also blended together with other types of weapons and hand-to-hand combat techniques.
Nowadays, law enforcement and special forces from around the world use PTK, including the Filipino Marines, who are some of the best experts at PTK.
What is the Purpose of Pekiti-Tirsia Kali?
Pekiti-Tirsia Kali was created for one specific objective: to kill your enemy quickly and swiftly.
All of the movements within PTK were designed to defeat an enemy in multiple ways as quickly as possible, hence why it is used by numerous special forces.
Fighting Methods and Weapons Used within PTK
There are numerous offshoot systems of PTK, but the original system was based on using 5 types of weapons. Those include:
- Solo Baston: Single Stick, Sword, or Spear
- Doble Baston: 2 Sticks or 2 Swords
- Malayu Sibat: Spear
- Daga y Daga: Knife to Knife
- Mano y Mano: Hand to Hand
- Dumog: Grappling
PTK Fighting Range
The art of PTK is used in all types of fighting ranges and is adaptable to any situation. Although, many of the techniques used in PTK are to counter an attack, cut the distance, and eliminate the threat. You will be well prepared to fight in any range depending on the scenario that you find yourself in.
Are Filipino Martial Arts a Great Choice for Self-Defence?
Like Krav Maga (also taught at Kombat Arts), PTK is a complete self-defence system. It not only teaches you to grapple and fight hand-to-hand, but also to use multiple types of weapons.
Being able to pick up anything like a hard stick and being capable of defending yourself is an invaluable skill. You will be ready for anything at a moment’s notice and act quickly.
Does PTK Have an Advantage Over Other Self-Defence Systems?
PTK definitely does have numerous advantages over traditional self-defence systems like Karate or boxing. That is because PTK was designed for real life scenarios, where people are trying to kill you.
Karate and boxing are good martial arts, but they were created for sport and miss that real world practicality. A martial art like PTK implements “dirty tactics” and will always keep you ready for anything that can happen in your life.
Are You Convinced Yet?
After reading through our breakdown of PTK, this should more than convince you to join our Filipino martial arts program. It is one of the most effective fighting systems right next to Krav Maga. Knowing a fighting system like this will keep you more than safe when you’re walking the streets here in Mississauga.
