Edgewise Workshop

Edgewise Workshop

On the Weekend students at Kombat Arts had the privilege of participating in an workshop with club owner, Joey de los Reyes. The workshop was designed to pull together techniques from different martial arts to deal with an edged weapon attacker in the clinch and grappling range.

Training for self-defence means training for high stress, unpredictable situations, it requires the guidance of a skilled instructor. With his years of experience training and teaching martial arts, Kru Joey, has mastered the art of delivering seminars such as this. In his usual comprehensive and engaging style, he broke down some practical techniques and gave useful advise for tough scenarios. The combination of athletic based martial arts, like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai with weapons based arts like Filipino Martial Arts, made for effective solutions to situations that could not be fully understood by training any one specific martial art alone.  One of the most important takeaways from the seminar however, was the importance of athletic preparedness and physical awareness. The idea being driven home was to take the tools being learned back to the training mats and practice them more aggressively.

The advantages of a workshop like this go well beyond the realm of self-defence; anyone can benefit from the confidence you have to gain if you train athletically for high stress, unpredictable situations. Martial artist who have trained extensively in one area have much to learn and much to offer when they experiment with a different style. For me personally, self-defence training in this manner, provides ample opportunity to learn and explore my own physical and mental limitations.  If you are looking to add to your game in any of these ways, be sure to keep an eye out for future workshops; and a big thanks you to Kru Joey for sharing your knowledge and experience.
