Watch It: “Bigger, Stronger, Faster”

When it appeared as if Alistair Overeem might have been ducking his urine test prior to tonight’s bout with Brock Lesnar, the reaction from fans and analysts was more nervousness (that the fight might not happen) than it was surprise.

Performance enhancing drugs are an ongoing conversation and controversy in combat sports, and that’s not going to change any time soon. In his documentary, Bigger, Stronger, Faster (2008), Christopher Bell looks at how the culture of steroids is intertwined with the American Dream. Both are about winning and both come parceled with a fair share of hypocrisy. But when does “If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying,” turn winning into a losing proposition? Focusing on himself and his bodybuilding brothers, Bell’s examination of PEDs is both personal and provocative.
