We Have A Challenge...

If they have a membership, people on average only go to the gym 2 times per week.
67% have a membership but never use it!
Heart and Stroke Canada reported that for 2014:
  • 60% of Canadians are overweight, and 25% of our children are overweight.
  • 1 in 4 Canadians are obese (this means that 25% and more of their body is composed of harmful fats).
  •  55% of adults report 30 minutes of activity per day (like walking)
  • 1 out of 4 kids get an hour of exercise per day
  • Only 6% of our adults get one hour or more of physical activity per day
These are a few random stats that I pulled off the Internet from resources like the Globe and Mail and Statistics Canada.
So here is the challenge.  Why are people still out of shape? There are tons of ways to get in shape.  There are tons of gyms out there. Yet we still have these issues.  Why? Let's identify some issues.
They have no idea what they are doing.

When I wrote this article, I was going to make this my last point.  But I figured you might get distracted and have to leave, and you would totally miss this point and all the goodies that came with it.
Some people actually have a gym membership.  But they have no idea what they are doing in there.  This is the challenge when you join a commercial gym.  You are only renting the equipment.  You're not getting properly trained and educated on how to use the equipment.  You can read more here.
As gym owners and trainers, we have a responsibility to educate our members.  That is the difference between a commercial gym and a training gym like KOMBAT ARTS.  So how can we help you? We are going to LOAD you up with goodies, to help you achieve your goals for 2016.

People think they don't need fitness.
Some people have other values at the top of their list: career, money, family, etc.  All of these can be important, but a "man's first wealth is his health". If you are not healthy, you might not be able to enjoy the other stuff, or even be alive to enjoy them.
"I look amazing! I'm in excellent shape!"
This is the person who is naturally skinny, maybe gets muscles pretty easily.  However what's going on inside your body? On a cellular level? And we all know that as you get older, your ability to manage your insulin, your tolerance to carbs and your hormones change.  If you don't learn how to develop good exercise and eating habits, you might find yourself having a hard time managing these changes as you get older.
What is fitness?
The media has kind of skewed what our perception of fitness should be.  First of all, we do not have to be in a gym.  Nowadays there are TONS of methods to get in shape.  Being outdoors, playing sports, yoga, dance studios, commercial gyms, training centers etc.
Fitness is defined by the end user.  Some people define fitness as having a shredded body.  Some people want the mind-body link for yoga to define their level of fitness.  Maybe just being able to keep up with your kids is your definition of fitness.
"I don't have time to measure every morsel of food I put in my mouth".
Nutrition is definitely part of fitness.  As well as sleep.  And stress management. And being around positive people.  There are many facets to fitness.  But let's focus on nutrition.  Notice I didn't use the word  "diet".  This is not some fad that you watched on TV.  This is really a lifestyle.
The challenge is that most people think that they need to measure everything and watch everything and figure out the origin of everything they put in their mouth in order to be health.
But that's not the case.
Good nutrition starts with the basics:
  • Drinking a lot of water
  • Eating the right foods at the right times
  • Portion control. This does not mean measuring every iota of food you put in your mouth
That's it.  Easy nutrition.  Everything else and you're an athlete.
